KEYNOTE-Johnny C. Taylor, Jr.-Workplace First Responders: How HR Is Helping Business Navigate COVID-19 and Other Challenges

Keynote Description-Even before the massive disruptions of COVID-19, the workplace was changing drastically— and faster than many leaders could plan for. Now, HR professionals have had to make some of the hardest decisions of our careers—because they directly impact people’s lives and livelihoods. In his keynote address, SHRM President and CEO Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., will unpack the role of HR as “workplace first responders,” ushering businesses into a world of remote work, health and safety protections, new talent strategies and budget constraints. Taylor will also discuss SHRM’s latest SHRM research on the return to work and the impact of the pandemic on business practices.

Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, is President and Chief Executive Officer of SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management. SHRM drives social and economic change in the workplace and fosters mutually beneficial work environments that serve both business and employees. Under Mr. Taylor’s leadership, the Society has grown to a record 300,000+ members in over 165 countries who impact the lives of more than 110 million workers every day.
As a global leader on all matters affecting work, workers and the workplace, Mr. Taylor is a sought-after voice by C-suite executives as well as state and federal elected policy makers. He frequently is invited to testify before Congress on critical workforce issues—from sexual harassment to paid leave—and authors a weekly column, “Ask HR,” in USA Today, the country’s largest newspaper.
Mr. Taylor is the Chair of the President’s Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and serves on the U.S. Department of Commerce American Workforce Policy Advisory Board, which advises the National Council for the American Worker on how to ensure that America’s students and workers have access to the affordable, relevant and innovative resources needed for success in the global economy.
Mr. Taylor holds both a Doctor of Jurisprudence and a Master of Arts with honors from Drake University. He obtained a Bachelor of Science with honors from the University of Miami. He is licensed to practice law in Florida, Illinois and Washington, D.C.

Session 2-Facing the Future: Creating a Culture of Innovation: Shawn Kent Hayashi

Description-This presentation will focus on creating an agile and innovative organization. First, it will describe the skill most needed—yet least developed—for 21st century leadership: futuristic thinking. Second, it will demonstrate how to apply futuristic thinking by discussing eight megatrends that have the potential to disrupt markets, supply chains, customers and employees in every industry. Third, the presentation will explore how best to equip teams to proactively plan for, adapt to, and seize the opportunities these megatrends will create. It will directly address the issue of resistance to facing a future of rapid change and economic uncertainty. By focusing on these key elements, this session will empower leaders and organizations to transform the anxiety related to disruption into the creativity needed for innovation.

Shawn Kent Hayashi is the founder and CEO of The Professional Development Group LLC and a global expert in developing collaboration and high performing teams.

Shawn has been featured in The New York Times, Forbes, and Fast Company. Her TEDx talk on The Future of [email protected] forecasts coming changes to the workplace, the growing need for collaboration, and the power of engagement.
Shawn earned an M.S. in Organization Dynamics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Session 3-The Future [of Work] is Human: Designing DEI Strategy with the Full Human in Mind-Michael O'Bryan

Description-Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives have never been more critical than in today’s work environments.  And, a one-size-fits-all approach to creating a DEI strategy won’t address the human aspects within your workforces that are critical to creating significant structural change.  A successful DEI plan impacts the bottom line of your organization and has meaningful impact to creating a workplace culture where your employees’ total experiences are honored and valued.  
Backed with research and data, Michael OBryan will share his real-world experiences and practical knowledge with attendees to provide both strategies and practices that will make a difference to HR professionals and their organizations solicit and include the input of diverse voices within your organization. These voices and perspectives are crucial in creating and framing the journey towards a more inclusive culture.  This journey towards transforming culture change will require HR leadership that possesses humility, an open mind and accountability.

Michael O’Bryan is an expert practitioner and budding researcher in the fields of community development, organizational culture, and human wellbeing. He is currently Director of Learning at The Village of Arts and Humanities and an Innovation Fellow at Drexel University’s Lindy Institute for Urban Innovation. He is the founder of Humanature, a consultancy working with nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies to transform how they understand and support human development, interaction, and performance. Past clients include NeighborWorks America, The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, and The United Negro College Fund. OBryan has spoken nationally about his work, including convenings at Cornell University, The Vera List Center for Arts and Politics at The New School, SPECTRUM, and the famed Apollo Theatre in New York.
OBryan holds a Bachelor’s degree in music from the University of the Arts and a graduate certificate in Childhood Trauma Studies from Jefferson University. He is a faculty member of the Career Studies Department at The Curtis Institute of Music, adjuncts at The University of Pennsylvania's Stuart Weitzman School of Design, and serves on The American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Commission on The Arts. He also currently serves on the boards of two philanthropic institutions, The Samuel S. Fels Fund and The Philadelphia Cultural Fund, and is everyday inspired by exploring the science of our humanity
