Job Levels and Job Titles:  Job Architecture Creating a System that Promotes Career Development and Supports “Pay for Performance”

Approved for 1.25 HRCI General Credits and SHRM PDC'S

Every company is made up of jobs; jobs and people are the center of what and how companies offer products and services. Often people costs are more than half of the operating budget.

Annual increases are slated for 3% - yet again.  We can all agree that we have a problem.  We cannot expect to hire employees at the minimum level of pay and ever get them to the midpoint/market with what we used to call normal annual increases.  We will need to work harder and smarter to win and keep employees. Career progression is the way to go and job hierarchies can help guide you and your employees to a process that supports your efforts to “pay people right.”

Overtime, job titles, job descriptions and job levels tend to get out of alignment.  Job architecture is the process by which we design a system for understanding company jobs, what each job contributes and how it fits into the organization.

What you will learn:

  • The power of Job Levels
    • Using Job Titles to accurately represent your job levels
    • Using Job Level Charts to create job hierarchies
    • Supporting career development
    • Providing a pay management tool

More take-a-ways:

  • Sample job level charts
  • Sample job title/organization level titles
